RIGGING A CHARACTER IN MAYA

So you want to learn some 3D character modelling and rigging techniques?. Look no further it's all here in this little project. The importance of good topology in the model for good deformations, what are you going to be doing with the rig? hand animation, HIK (human inverse kinematics) for connecting your rig to motion capture data (mocap). Close up shots with the camera or full-body?. All this is relevant before you venture into a project and of course a storyboard. To cut it short being organized and planning out your project will save you a lot of your time in the long term!.

CEPHALOPOD RIGGING (TENTACLES)

If you have seen Pixar's Finding Dory film then you have met Hank the octopus. This has to be one of the most complex octopus character animation rigs ever done. So you're up for the challenge?. I gave it a shot and below you can see a very short animated clip of my octopus rig in dynamic mode, you'll have to use your imagination for the rest of the film haha as some of the water splash effects render times were as high as 40 minutes per image, I'll let you do the maths!.

SHAKE IT JIGGLE IT

The little clockwork mouse is what is called a scene object, these are sometimes static geometry that is present in the scene but does not need to be animated. The little mouse though is important and it has to move it is what is causing the cat character to react. So first of if you want to model something get yourself images to use as reference. A little bit of history for you basically wind up toys include a visible key which is directly attached to a spring, once wound up this is the force that drives the cogs that finish up producing the various movements. Wind-up machines became known as wind-up toys and were designed in different forms to move around.  European toymakers created and mass-produced the first windup tin toys during the late 1880s. Over the next 60 to 70 years, more manufacturers created more intricate designs. The trend stopped with the introduction of the small and inexpensive Alkaline batteries in the 1960s, which allowed motors to run without a wind-up mechanism. Over the next 20 years, wind up toys lost popularity.

ANIMATED LOGO

A spin & drop animation works on any of your logos that are round. As a rendered image sequence it works perfectly as a .gif image that could be used as an E-mail signature. This would give your clients a little eye candy at the bottom of your business E-mails and may even work for you as I quote images stay in peoples memories a lot longer than words:

You remember the E-mail we received a couple of weeks ago the one with the little spinning logo on it

CUBEMAP

Cubemap uses a camera in Maya that produces six inline images. These represent the six inside faces of a cube and it is a 6:1 format (for example 9600px by 1600px gives us six square images 1600px x 1600px). The rendered image is then exported to Photoshop where it is sliced.  Each image is then saved and numbered accordingly to represent a cube in flat UV space.
