VRAY MATERIAL ID MASKS

Under VRay Render Settings > Render Elements select Material ID and add it to the right column. On the material itself in the Attributes, editor click Attributes > Material ID this will add a section where you can add a colour of your choice. When you render the scene you will end up with a material id pass for free it doesn't make any difference to render times...

I WANNA BE A GAME CHARACTER

As mobile 2d games are becoming more and more popular due to all the fantastic software available to design & build them. But you still have to create the game art and characters are a major part of this process!. All the moves such as idle, walk, run & jump etc have to be laid out on pre-defined sprite sheets. 2d is limited and with a tiny 33° camera rotation the result, in my opinion, is so much better it is called 2.5d. The fact that the character now has a little perspective does not really matter when layered over true 2d backgrounds it still looks good!.

TOON CHARACTER CLOTHING

There are lots of resources online which discuss what I am about to explain to you but a lot of them are for professional production rigs and therefore complicated setups using wraps and shrink wrap deformers low poly skinned colliders etc. This of course is the way to go if it is for a professional rig but I have another solution to show you that works pretty well based on a bone and SDK setup if you just want something quickly!..

MOTION CAPTURE

Most industrial animation these days is done using motion capture (mocap) data. Getting this data is a very expensive process involving special rooms equipped with cameras able to see the subject wearing a special suit from all angles. This raw data is then converted into formats such as bvh, bip, c3d & fbx that can be read by software such as Motion Builder/ Maya's built-in HIK (Human Inverse Kinematics) system.

RENDERING GLASS & WATER

Like a lot of CG artists over the years, I have collected a huge library of shaders & materials for texturing and using on my 3D models. A lot of glass shaders for use on architectural renders windows interior & exterior, solid glass and liquid (water shaders). This little fishbowl is the perfect demonstration of everything involved when rendering glass and I will show you my setup for getting a result such as this.
